Canva is a helpful tool for basic editing and creating graphics using one simple website. As a Canva Pro member, you have access to a library of 420,000+ free templates and millions of premium stock photos. In addition, you will get unlimited use of most tools plus no watermark on templates created with Canva Pro tools.
In this blog post, I will be going over some basic guidelines on how to use Canva for beginners.
Just keep in mind that these are just the basics and should be used as a guideline.
There will be five parts to this blog post article, which include:
1. Signing up for Canva
The first thing you should do is download the canva app on your mobile or you can also use it in the browser on mobile or laptop both.
Secondly, create your canva account using your Email ID.
Thirdly, make yourself familiar with the canva.
With Canva’s new features and layout, it may seem a bit overwhelming. Especially for someone new to Canva. For a newbie, it’s quite difficult using canva and figuring out where something is located. But believe me, after reading this article on Terminal Stack it will be going easy for you. Canva is free to use, but you can upgrade to the pro version as well to use additional features for a less price.
2. Creating your first design
Let’s take a look around the home page and learn how to find what you need to start designing. With canva, you can design anything. There are thousands of professional templates to get you started. You can explore templates in a few ways. Start by typing keywords in a search bar. Browse by document theme or scroll down the page and be inspired.
To create a design, click on the rectangular purple icon with the words “Create a design” to get started.
It is located at the top right corner of your screen.
Use the picture down below as a guide.
Secondly, choose the size for the design which you are going to create. If you have something specific in mind, you can enter custom dimensions here.
I chose the 800 x 1200px size which is a “blog graphic” size because these images are for my blog.
When creating images with Canva, you have to make sure that you choose the correct size for whatever platform you’ll be hosting your images on. There are different sizes to choose from to fit your specific needs. Like for instance, if you’re creating an image to be used on Pinterest, then choose the 1000 x 1500 px for Pinterest. Or if you’re creating an image to be used on Instagram, then select the correct size for Instagram. In other words, match the correct size of the canva design to the platform you’ll be posting it on.
Now that you’ve decided on a size, it’s time to create your first design. Use the image given below. Click on templates for a pre-made design.
And edit the design by replacing the current images and text with your images and text. There are many different templates to choose from. On the top menu, you can discover templates by theme. Explore photo and icon libraries, printed products, apps, and more.
Templates are good to use and very useful, especially if you’re a “newbie” to Canva. Because “templates” basically do the work for you and all you have to do is replace a few things here and there to make your design more personable.
The sidebar helps you to organize your designs. You’ll find all the designs you have created in this tab and designs by your team in this one. Creating a team is easy. Just add the people you want to design with, assign their roles and invite them. You can also create folders for designs, photos, content, and ideas to keep your project organized. Canva’s homepage makes it easy for you to design anything.
3. Saving your Canva design
Till now you have learned how to create the designs, now it’s time to save your designs. Saving your Canva design is super easy and simple to do. All you have to do to save your work is to click on the download button which is at the top right-hand corner. Then click on “save as”
Be sure to choose the appropriate file type when saving your design. Then click the download button to save your Canva design onto your device.
4. How to upload media on to Canva
There are lots of benefits to uploading and using your media on Canva. You can upload your pictures and videos and use them in your design. For instance, you can upload your pictures and use them as background images or as a small icon as part of your canva design.
To upload media:
Firstly, click on the round grey icon that’s located on the left-hand sidebar, and then click on “uploads.”
From there, click on upload media. And you’ll be able to upload your pictures and videos. You can also use Canva’s stock photos/video as well.
Keep in mind that to use your photo, you must upload it first!
Canva may seem a bit overwhelming at first.
But with practice and patience, you’ll be able to master the art of creating designs with Canva in no time!
I must say that the only problem I had with the new updated version of Canva, was being unable to navigate and locate specific elements.
However, I do enjoy using the new updated version of Canva. Because it’s a lot more convenient.
And I can easily and quickly create designs because now I know where everything is located!
